If I said to you that this match involved the team in 1st place in Group F and the 3rd placed team in Group F, I'm guessing that you would not think that Hungary were sitting pretty at the top of the group with 4 points and Portugal had only managed to pick up 2. That is exactly how it has turned out and I am more baffled than anybody, fair play to Hungary, I have backed them to lose both games they have played so far and they've proved me wrong both times, I can't really argue with that.
Hungary's first game was excellent, and even though they rode their luck slightly against Austria with Alaba's shot striking the post after 45 seconds and Hinteregger's goal being ruled out for a foul in the build up, they still managed to score 2 brilliant goals against a team that a lot of people fancied as their dark horses to win the tournament 2 weeks ago! Their second game was a bit more of a smash and grab at the end of the game against Iceland after falling behind to a questionable goalkeeping error and an even more questionable penalty decision. Still they did manage to snatch a point and will probably qualify from Group F even if they don't manage to beat Portugal which is a magnificent feat from a team that on paper isn't the best by any stretch.
Portugal have pretty much dominated both of their games and not managed to get the result they deserve, against Iceland one lapse in concentration allowed them to equalise and against Austria, I think they could've played for another 90 minutes and they wouldn't have scored. Something mystical seemed to be stopping Cristiano Ronaldo from finding the back of the net, he even missed a penalty which is very unlike him. The thing with Portugal is that they always seem to reach the knockout phases of major tournaments without playing well at all and I fancy them to scrape through again here. If they do go through and knock England out then all will be normal with the world again.
I think Portugal will pull this one out of the bag, yes Hungary have impressed and picked up some decent results but I think Portugal will end that fairytale relatively swiftly. They have been really unlucky in their 2 games and I feel that their luck has to turn around at some point, why not in this game?
There seems to be something mystical helping Hungary through this tournament too and with the luck that Portugal have had during this tournament they could end up conceding a couple of goals against a team full of confidence just like Austria did in the first game. This is an outside punt remember so don't go crazy but it could be worth a cheeky flutter.
I said this before and I will say it again, Portugal's luck has to change. They should do the business here and get at least 2nd place in the group to set up a game in the knockout phase against England or another opponent. They're simply to good not to get out of this group and they should get it done later than they had hoped but they wont care.
Portugal have been slow out of the blocks in this tournament so I imagine most of the bets will go on Draw/Portugal or Hungary/Portugal but I can see the Portuguese doing the business early on here and sinking Hungary so my money will be going on Portugal to win both halves.
Fernando Santos seems to be playing Nani up front due to Portugal's lack of an out and out number 9. He scored in the first game and seems to be in good form, better form than his former United team mate Ronaldo. Nani should be a decent price to open the scoring and after a decent season in Turkey his confidence should be up. I can see him bagging the first goal of this contest.
Ok so this isn't quite an inside tip telling you that one of the best players and free kick takers in the world might score a free kick but he hasn't scored one for a while and I think the fact that he missed that penalty in the last game will make him even more determined to score by any means necessary in this one. That could be by smashing a free kick from 30 yards into the top corner as he has done hundreds of times before.
